Mini-Foxwoods is what the plan sounds like. It seems years ago that the “Wonder of It All” had 6300 slots and seven different casinos incorporated into one property. Since then, Foxwoods has consistantly downsized its gambling offerings while adding entertainment and rides. Now, due to the pandemic, the Once Largest Casino Is About To Become Even Smaller.

Foxwoods refuses to admit the lack of visitation is the problem. Jason Guyot, Foxwoods’ interim chief executive officer, blames “the continued spread of the COVID-19 virus throughout [southeastern CT] has led to increased public concerns and continued state restrictions, which have all resulted in significantly reduced business volumes for us here at Foxwoods Resort Casino.”

Foxwoods is returning to “Phase 1 reopening plan with a few small exceptions.”

Rise of COVID Cases in Connecticut

New London County has the fourth-highest number of cases in the state as of December 4th. Foxwoods Resort and Mohegan Sun are in Ledyard (Mashantucket) and Uncasville, respectively. Southeastern Connecticut continues to be a hot spot in December.

Foxwoods is moving towards winter hours and operations for some parts of the property.

Fox Tower

The Fox Tower hotel is closed. The tower’s gaming floor hours are now noon to 2 a.m. Friday through Sunday. MGM shared this area until 2013. Closed venues still include The TopGolf Swing Suite, Juniors, Shrine, and the Food Court.

Fox Tower Entertainment – Comedian Anthony Rodia’s Grand Theater performances Friday and Saturday night were to be the casino’s last shows for the time being. All shows scheduled after December 5th in the Grand Theater are postponed or rescheduled. However, Centrale’s weekend music and comedy will continue on schedule.

Great Cedars Hotel and Casino Area

Great Cedar Hotel will remain open Thursday – Sunday only beginning December 7th (reopening Thursday, December 10th). The Great Cedar Casino Table Games will be temporarily close beginning December 11th. Live table games can be found in the Grand Pequot Casino.

Closed dining includes Day Da Bakery, Fudruckers, Sbarro and Cake by Franck.

Rainmaker Experiment Didn’t Last Long

Also, the Bingo schedule is now Wednesday – Sunday only.

More Furloughs in New England’s Casinos

Much like casinos in the rest of the country, New England’s casinos have had to deal with capacity restrictions, leading to property furloughs and layoffs. According to Guyot, the 130 furloughs mostly involve employees in the shut down areas. Guyot said he hopes to be able to rehire furloughed workers after New Year’s. He said a total of about 2,800 full- and part-time employees and “casuals,” who work as needed, remain employed.

Who Can Visit Connecticut

Restrictions on Massachusetts travelers, in particular, have hurt Foxwoods. According to The Day’s Brian Hallenbeck, Guyot said, “We’re still welcoming residents of Massachusetts to stay for multiple nights.” Hallenbeck continues to point out the “Connecticut’s travel advisory requires travelers from listed states and territories to quarantine for 14 days or provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test if visiting Connecticut for more than 24 hours. New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island are exempt from the advisory.”

SEQUIM, WA, July 24, 2020—The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe will open the first phase of the 7 Cedars Resort master-plan, five story, 100 room hotel, positioned adjacent to the 7 Cedars Casino in Sequim, Washington.

The Tribe worked with Rice Fergus Miller Architecture on design choices—using natural elements spanning from water to sky that will visually tell the story of the Pacific Northwest, and our Tribe’s history and culture. The design team worked to create a seamless integration of the design vision from architecture to interiors. Warm tones of the wood façade and tower colors in the lobby are complimented by a custom curated art experience that fills the hotel. The art featured in the hotel is by Coast Salish artists and Pacific Northwest photographers, the directive from the leadership of 7 Cedars was to bring to life a wide array of both tribal and nature-based art, not featuring a single tribe, but rather featuring artists from all over the region.

The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s goal is to enhance a visitor’s sense of place, its history, and to offer an opportunity to experience the beauty and authenticity of our natural surroundings.

The art collection on each floor of the hotel tells a story of a “Layer of Life”, Water-Land-Trees-Sky. A 42-foot totem pole, carved by Nathan Gilles, named “Welcome to the Land of Sea to Sky” will greet you as you enter this beautiful setting.

A complimentary piece to the art collection is the custom corridor carpet inspired by the shoreline of the Olympic Peninsula. Tribal Council Chairman/CEO Ron Allen loaned RFM’s design team a number of cedar hats from his personal collection that were used for inspiration for the custom guestroom carpet.

The first floor is comprised of a large lobby, conference/meeting/ banquet space, administrative offices, and the Jamestown Java Coffee Shop. The four upper floors offer 100 rooms that are unlike any other property on the peninsula and provide an array of guestroom experiences in a boutique setting. The hotel has five room types, King, Double Queen, King Suites, Executive Suites, and one-bedroom Corner Suites. The rooms are designed with uniquely crafted themes of Cedar Forest, Salish Sea, and Canoe Journey, which inspire the palettes, colors, textures, and tone in each room.

The long-awaited hotel will open August 4, 2020. The Tribe looks forward to this journey and its continued growth as part of this community.
